A charming old town and bohemian atmosphere

A fantastic city break

Portugal’s second largest city, Porto lies nestled amongst the hills overlooking the mouth of the Douro River. It has a beautiful Old Town of cobbled winding lanes, tiny churches and shady plazas that has been awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO. The other face of the city centre is less attractive; dilapidated 20th century town-houses have been left to ruin as the younger generation desert the city to live in the suburbs by the sea.

Regardless of the shabbier parts of town, this still makes for a fantastic city break, with a fast and efficient metro system, some amazing new architecture and an explosion of art galleries and boutique shops.

There are a huge number of places of interest here. Visit one of the Port Wine Cellars in the Ribeira de Gaia area of the city by the river for some wine tasting. Have a look around the Modern Art museum at Serralves and the Casa da Música (House of Music) concert hall in the Boavista area. Haggle for fruit, meat, fish and vegetable in the traditional Mercado do Bolhão market. Or simply wander through the mazy streets and alleys and take in the bohemian atmosphere.

City breaks in Porto – River cruises and football stadiums

A river cruise is a popular way to see the city and beyond; you can choose an hour long trip or a day-long excursion way out into the Portuguese countryside. Football fans can take a tour of Dragão Stadium, home of FC Porto. Or you could hire a bike and explore the city that way.

Travellers to Porto should make sure they invest in a comprehensive travel policy. Paying for medical treatment abroad can be costly if you don’t have travel insurance in place, and lost or stolen belongings are a hassle to replace in a foreign country. Fortunately, Insure & Away have some fantastic affordable policies to protect your health and wealth abroad. For more information, give our friendly team a call – we’re always happy to help!
