Once the largest country in Europe, Lithuania’s borders and influence have shrunk somewhat since the 15th Century, leaving just a few historic monuments as a memento of those golden ages. At one time, the Lithuanian empire stretched far out into Russia, Poland and Moldova. Lithuania today is a compact, bustling, quirky place, with a rich history that melds pagan roots with passionate Catholicism, forbidding Soviet architecture with medieval castles and wild forests with intriguing cities.
The Old Town of the nation’s tiny capital city, Vilnius, is like something out of a fairy tale. Baroque spires silhouette the skyline, medieval buildings lurch up ancient cobbled streets, and small, restful squares provide an excellent shady spot to watch the world go by. There is a quirkiness about this city that gives it a unique character all of its own – from the world’s only statue of Frank Zappa, to the bohemian cafes and bars that are the favourite haunts of artists and musicians from around the world.
For those interested in exploring the coast, the seaside town of Palanga is a great place to see. Beautiful beaches and endless sand dunes provide a relaxing place to catch some sun. Or for a unique Baltic experience, visit the Hill of Crosses a few kilometres from the northern city Šiauliai; a popular pilgrimage site with over 100,000 crosses of all sizes dotted over the hillside.
Like many of the Baltic States, Lithuania is notable for its beautiful countryside and scenery. Dark forests, rolling hills, torrential rivers and mirror-smooth lakes abound here. Anybody interesting in outdoor pursuits such as fishing, hiking, kayaking or cycling should visit the Aukštaitija National Park, home to a variety of native Lithuanian species including elk, deer, and wild boar.
Anyone travelling to Lithuania would be wise to invest in good quality holiday insurance. Should something untoward happen and you require urgent medical attention, paying out of your own pocket could work out very expensive. Insure & Away provide a range of policies, from single trip to annual multi trip, so you can enjoy your trip to Lithuania with complete peace of mind.
