A beautiful city where old and new collide

Immerse yourself in a city unlike any other

Portugal’s capital city is one of the most captivating destinations in southern Europe. Sprawling up a steep hillside and looking out over the slowly meandering Rio Tejo, Lisbon is a lively, thriving place of gleaming white-washed buildings, narrow winding alleyways, Gothic churches, charming museums and shady tree-lined boulevards.

Canary yellow trams amble down the wide main streets, while tiny sun-trap pavement cafes provide a place for residents and visitors alike to pass the afternoon with wine and freshly baked bread. Atmospheric 1930’s era restaurants, shady squares and the grandeur of the seaside promenade that looks out of the Atlantic are juxtaposed with Lisbon’s energetic, youthful bar scene; a myriad of taverns, jazz cafes, reggae clubs, and techno bars found in the hilltop district of Bairro Alto. All around the Lisbon, nightclubs and music bars have sprung up in the city’s old buildings, whether they be down by the docks or in crumbling 18th century manors.

Take a visit to the Cristo Rei; a huge statue of Christ standing on the opposite bank of the Tejo River, similar to the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro. The views of the city from here are amazing. Explore the Castelo de São Jorge, also on a hill affording breath-taking views, and accessible through the atmospheric old neighbourhood of Alfama.

The Jardim Zoológico will keep the kids entertained with its numerous animals and beautiful open green spaces, while Lisbon Botanical Garden is one of the oldest gardens in Europe and a great place to while away the hours on sunny days.

All visitors to Lisbon should be sure to invest in good quality travel insurance. While the city may seem laid-back and relatively safe, there’s still the risk of theft, injury and accidents that are present in any large European metropolis. Insure & Away can offer a reliable safety net to protect you if anything untoward happens, by providing comprehensive, affordable travel cover. Just ring our friendly team to speak to an advisor who will tell you exactly how we can look after your health and wealth in Lisbon.
