A landlocked country situated in the very heart of the continent, Hungary is known as the gateway to Eastern and Central Europe. The country is rated one of the top 15 most popular places to visit in the world, and boasts one of the world’s most beautiful cities in its capital, Budapest. There is a huge amount to see and do here, including a number of World Heritage Sites, the largest lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton), the second largest thermal lake in the world Lake Heviz, and the most expansive natural grass plains on the continent (Hortobagy).
Hungary has a reputation in the region for being liberal and laid back. The country has a unique language and culture that sets it apart from every other nearby nation, and is a source of great pride to Hungarians. One of the biggest draws to Hungary for tourists is Budapest. Located in Central Hungary, Budapest makes for a fantastic city break, with it’s a fantastically eclectic mix of architecture ranging from neo-classical to baroque to art nouveau. Beautiful parks, fascinating museums, excellent food and drink, vibrant nightlife and of course the lazy, meandering Danube have given this city is reputation as the most beautiful and exciting in central Europe.
Look further afield, and you’ll find there’s a whole host of other exciting areas to explore in Hungary. The huge Lake Balaton area is incredibly picturesque and fantastic for anybody interested in sailing, kayaking, bird watching, fishing, cycling, hiking or horse riding. The rolling vineyards of the Villány Hills in Southern Transdanubia make for wonderfully relaxing holidays, and the fertile farmlands of the Southern Plain offer old-world hospitality and delicious rustic country cooking. For a taste of traditional Hungarian culture, visit the Őrség region in the far west, and for a unique experience visit the cave baths of Miskolc-Tapolca near the Bükk hills in the north.
Whether you’re planning a city break of a few weeks backpacking around the country, it’s wise to invest in comprehensive holiday insurance when visiting Hungary.
