Croatia consists of 5 regions, starting with Istria – a peninsula in the northwest that borders Slovenia. Istria is often referred to as ‘new Tuscany’; a land of gentle rolling hills, valleys and plains. Here you’ll find hilltop villages, a rugged coastline and strong Italian cultural influence. Then there’s:
Kvarner to the south of Istria, made up of two distinct areas; the coastal Bay of Kvarner and the highlands of Lika and Gorski Kotar. In Kvarner you’ll find the city of Opatija; a playground for the rich and famous with old, boutique hotels, and Rijeka; a bustling port town on the coast.
Dalmatia; the most southerly coastal region of Croatia, consisting of numerous islands and a strip or mainland bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina. This has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world; a mix of spectacular beaches, ancient ruins, fishing ports and impressive historic cities.
Slavonia, made up of the distinct areas of Slavonija and Baranja, forms one of two interior regions in the country, and has a rural identity of forests and fields. And the north central highlands of Central Croatia is where you’ll find Zagreb; a heady mix of sombre Austro-Hungarian architecture, raucous beer halls, characterful pubs, elegant restaurants and myriad art galleries.
