A quaint medieval town

Picturesque, popular and often packed, Bruges is Belgium’s most visited city and a must-see for anyone visiting the country. You’ll find top-class restaurants, attractive market squares, gothic churches, baroque alms houses, and relaxing bistros here. A small, compact medieval city surrounded by a canal, this picture-postcard destination is one of the most visited in Western Europe.

One of the best things about Bruges is that it’s small enough to explore by foot. The historic old centre is easily walkable, making this a great choice for those with small children or the mobility impaired. And despite its small size, the city certainly punches above its weight in terms of things to see and do.

Between 9am-5pm, you can visit the Grote Markt (closed on Mondays), where a huge selection of delectable Belgium foodstuffs and handicrafts are on sale. At the location of the Grote Markt you’ll also find the Belfry Tower; a climb of 366 steps that affords panoramic views of the city when you reach the top.

Another popular tourist attraction are the tour boats which float gently down the city’s canals; a great way of seeing the place with a tour guide who can explain the history of the buildings as they pass.

Couples may wish to experience one of the half hour horse-drawn cart rides around the city’s old centre; a lovely romantic experience, especially at night when the streets are all lit up and look incredibly atmospheric.
Or for the more active, consider hiring a bicycle and touring the city that way. Add to this a fine arts museum, numerous churches, brewery tours, a chocolate museum and countless bars and shops to explore, and you’ve got plenty to keep you occupied.

While Bruges is relatively crime-free compared to larger cities such as Paris and Berlin, there’s always the chance of being the victim of theft or losing your possessions. This can be a major headache if your passport or holiday money goes missing. What’s more, falling ill or having an accident in a foreign country will always put a dampener on any holiday. Ensure that you’re well-protected with a good quality travel policy from Insure & Away. Our policies are comprehensive and affordable, and our customer service is second to none.
