A small but charming city

A breath-taking and surreal atmosphere

A small, attractive capital city, what Bern lacks in size it certainly makes up for in charm. The city’s pride and joy has to be its beautiful Medieval Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with long, cobbled streets lined with grand 15th century buildings. Bern is located on a peninsula with the river Aere meandering past. Ornate fountains, ancient clock towers and 4 miles of arcaded walkways all add to the breath-taking and sometimes surreal atmosphere here.

The city abounds with history. You’ll find a number of fascinating museums here, including the Berne Historical Museum on Helvetiaplatz 5, the Museum of Fine Arts on Hodlerstrasse 12 and the Swiss Alpine Museum on Helvetiaplatz 4. Visit the Bundeshaus (the Swiss House of Parliaments) on Bundesplatz 3, or Einsteinhaus on Kramgasse 49 – a small apartment-turned-museum where Albert Einstein used to live.

Families will love a day out at the Tierpark Dählhölzli zoo, located on Tierparkweg 1. Or visit the Bear pits from where the city is reputed to have got its name.

Arrange a reliable safety net

Other places of interest include the Gurten; a hill outside the city with a beautiful park that affords stunning views across the landscape. Sports fans should take a tour of SC Bern’s ice hockey stadium; the second largest in Europe.

While Switzerland has a reputation for being a fairly safe country, the truth is that it’s wise to invest in good travel insurance wherever you go abroad. Accidents or illness can befall you anywhere, from Bolivia to Belgium, as can theft or losing your possessions. It makes far more to sense to have a comprehensive travel policy in place to act as a safety net should the worst happen.

It needn’t cost the earth; Insure & Away offer effective travel policies at highly affordable prices, so you can travel with complete peace of mind without breaking the bank.
