Sprouts, strong beer, Tin-Tin… the world has much to thank Belgium for, and the country can make for a great holiday on the continent. The picturesque medieval city of Bruges is a firm city-break favourite for holidaymakers across Europe, with its cobbled streets, ancient churches and cultured cafés. Ghent has a rich history, bags of culture and some attractive waterways to explore – the large student population here ensures the city also has a vibrant nightlife scene also. And Brussels – unofficial capital of the EU – has a pretty city centre, lots of museums to enjoy and a cosmopolitan feel to it.
Belgium can be divided into 3 areas; Flanders is the northern, Dutch-speaking area of the country. Here the cities of Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent can be found. Brussels is in the middle of the country, roughly on the border between north and south. Both Dutch and French are spoken here. And Wallonia is the southern, French-speaking region – there is also a small German-speaking region of the south near the German border.
One of the best things about Belgium is central proximity to a number of other countries, making it easy to include on the itinerary of a trip exploring the central European nations. Holland, France, Germany, and Luxembourg all border to Belgium and take only a short drive or train journey to reach. That’s not say there isn’t plenty to do in Belgium itself – chocolate tasting, beer-sampling, exploring ancient castles, floating down canals… there’ll be plenty to keep you occupied here.
Wherever you go in Belgium, it’s advisable to make sure you have arranged a good travel policy. You’re belongings and important documents are just as likely to get lost or stolen here as anywhere else, and will be just as much of a hassle to replace. Then there’s the risk of injury or illness, which could potentially cost you an arm and leg even if you do have an EHIC in place. Fortunately, Insure & Away offer a range of affordable, comprehensive travel policies, from single trip to annual multi trip, so you can travel with complete peace of mind. Why not give our friendly team a call? We’re always pleased to help!
